Philosophy In The Bedroom (MoshPit Theatre)
By Felicity Martin | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Based on the book written by the Marquis de Sade, this play plunges us into 18th Century France with an unexplained punk-rock twist. A huge bed draped in velvet sets the scene for this bawdy and, quite frankly, vulgar performance. Fifteen-year-old Eugénie is ‘educated’ about the pleasures of the flesh in an appallingly drastic manner, yet it is not until her morally conscious mother arrives to stop the debacle that the real horror unfolds. The socio-political undercurrent of the original text is obliterated by a production that chooses to focus on disturbing violation. The only strength of the performance is that the troupe’s abysmal acting detracts from any potential realism the play has to offer. For rape fans only.
