Opposition (Hannah Silva / Arts Council England)
By Lisa Clarkson | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
The descriptive label ‘surreal’ is ubiquitous at the Fringe; surreal comedy, surreal theatre – it’s sprinkled liberally, and often inaccurately, when describing all sorts. However, it is certainly apt in the case of Hannah Silva’s ‘Opposition’ which lingered in my head for days, and perhaps even in my dreams – though I can barely recall a synopsis. Twittering ear-worms, chanting, and a completely engrossing, demanding and emotionally unsettling performance left me – and I suspect the rest of the audience – in a state of discomfort. Perceptibly an attack on the ‘Big Machine’, the production ironically harnessed technology to a frightening end. I still can’t work out if I enjoyed it, or even what happened in that room, but I urge you to find out for yourselves.
Zoo Southside, 14 – 28 Aug (not 22), 2.45pm (3.45pm), £5.00 – £8.00, fpp286.
