One Thousand And One Nights – Part Two (Edinburgh International Festival / Dash Arts)
By Alice Longhurst | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
The second half of this European premiere continues and concludes the intoxicating tale of the legendary Shahrazad in the same striking style as the first part. Director Tim Supple uses Arabic, French and English dialogue, along with English subtitles, as well as a cast drawn from all over the Middle East, to convey the timeless power of these exotic tales within tales. Although the narrative follows Part One, this is very much a stand-alone performance. Running length is similar at around three hours and the show features more graphic violence and erotic scenes, carefully balanced by light-hearted wit and foolery. This is the real Arabian Nights in an evening of fantastical storytelling that makes real life pale in comparison.
Royal Lyceum, dates and times vary, £10.00 – £36.00, eifpp20.
