Much Ado About Nothing – The Dogberry Diaries (Spin-Off Theater)
By Julian Benson | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Belying the wealth of ideas present in this retelling of Shakespeare’s play, a rough performance and underdeveloped techniques lets down what could be a fantastic show. Eve Stebbings fills her play with neat staging tricks to facilitate her one-woman show; masks and hats hung on a clothes-line allow her to duck in and out of characters quickly – a novel method that, if done more smoothly, would be impressive. Unfortunately, many of the ideas don’t seem developed to their full potential; assigning different sounds to sections of the audience could have seen her conducting us throughout the play, but once assigned, the idea seemed to be left unused. A charming performer, however; I will be looking forward to next year’s show.
