Master Harold…And The Boys (Bishops Diocesan College)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

As its run ended on 9th August, you can no longer see ‘Master Harold… And The Boys’ at the Fringe. This is a shame because it’s really rather good. A lot of this is down to playwright Athol Fugard’s beautiful and subtle script, but credit must also go to the young actors of Bishop Diocesan College who, aside from the odd fumbled line, perform as slickly as any Fringe company of more advanced years. They deftly communicate the complex relationship between white teenage Harold and the two black men, Sam and Willie, who run his mother’s tea shop in Apartheid South-Africa. I hope they come back next year and bring even more Fugard with them.
