Like A Virgin (Zoe Lewis Presents)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Despite a full bodied and fun performance, Zoe Lewis’ solo show is let down by an unexplored generic story. The show follows Lesley – a 37 year old who decides she wants a child, but lacks the requisite male half of the equation – as she opts for artificial insemination. Her journey from hope to fruition is fraught with bad times and friends asking her why she’s going it alone, but in fairytale like manner, all these problems melt away on the baby’s arrival and even Lesley is surprised by the sudden change. This ending, however desirable, is largely implausible; Lewis doesn’t offer any expansion on beyond the fluffy feeling that babies are the solution to all our problems.
