Life’s A Game (Canvas Theatre)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

‘Life’s A Game’ takes this aphorism literally, as the cast roll an imaginary die and land in different eras of history such as WWI, and then perform a scene from that era. Some are strikingly innovative, while others are terribly clichéd. The cast dancing to ‘He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands’ wearing Hitler masks to symbolise his reign of power at the time is bizarre but original, but a scene of WWI soldiers talking of ‘Jerry’ is disappointingly subpar and smacks of the musical ‘Oh! What A Lovely War’. This is probably a result of the cast themselves only having popular references and clichés of these historical events to draw on, which mars an otherwise engaging look at the past.
