Golden Aged (Queen Mary Theatre Company)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

The student years are really the golden years: carefree and unafraid of fun, just like this company. Set in a retirement home for superheroes, this joyful piece is pure light entertainment and follows the attempted escape of the geriatric occupants from a barbarous matron. The characters are a little ridiculous, of course – the brutal, mono-browed and sickly coloured matron is particularly outrageous and foolishly wonderful. Whilst there were some highlights from all performances, the enthusiasm does seem to lag at points – generally the whole thing could be sharper and pacier. Scenes are playfully changed through slightly careless dance routines, featuring some unfortunately bad lip-synching. Still, you don’t have to take yourself too seriously while you’re young and bright.
