First Light (Wayfarer Productions Ltd)

The impressive cast credentials made me snuggle into my chair, giddy with anticipation. Unfortunately the production is weak. Child abuse and paedophilia are difficult subjects that need to be addressed; however, the cliché lines and situations in this show make for many head-in-hand moments. The endless and unnecessary swearing – strange, given this is set in a children’s school – seems the result of bad, cringe-making writing. The set is cumbersome and uninventive, resulting in awkward scene changes where the actors seem at a loss as for where to go. They do, however, make the best of the two dimensional characters they have been given, and there are brief redeeming moments of innocent beauty.
