Emblem – Spontaneous Thoughts On Perception (Ludus Ludius Improvisation Theatre Co / PBH’s Free Fringe)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Arriving at the venue to find the performers chatting cheerfully to the audience at the bar, you may feel like you’ve walked in on a rehearsal. It’s an impression that stays with you as the company exhaustively explores a single suggestion from the audience with ambling sketches and flippant philosophy. The results are uneven. There’s plenty of surreal imagination at work, but despite a gloriously silly game of Chinese whispers in five languages, there’s not enough inspiration to sustain the show. The inexperienced players spend too long groping for new angles, letting scenes fade away without a punchline. Though spontaneous, this feels less like a structured, theatrical game and more like a group of friends playing.
