Do Not Go Gentle (American High School Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Taking its title from a Dylan Thomas poem, ‘Do Not Go Gentle’ allows its young cast to tackle some truly poignant material. Sarah Priddy’s performance as the witty and recently deceased Lillian Barron is lifelike and passionate as she watches the visiting family who come to clear her house be plagued with memories. It is here where the performance falls down – these flashbacks become over-done and elongated, and the shift between present and past is stilted. Elsewhere, characters move like rag-dolls across the stage, and descriptions of the absent set are unrealistic. A reflection on life and loss and what we leave behind, this production could do without a few of those flashbacks and a few more relaxed actors.
