Did You Used To Be R D Laing? (Mike Maran Productions)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

It’s on the page that this musical storytelling makes its biggest blunder. By heralding Mike Maran’s narration with a similarly anecdotal narrative of its own, the programme both over-reveals the production’s substance and its primary aims. A programme should be a window into a play, not an observatory. Maran’s narration, delivered alongside David Milligan’s sprightly piano-playing, is a far more eloquent voice – even ‘spokesman’ – for the life of psychiatrist R.D. Laing. Through a sensitive balance of comedy and tragedy, they can connect with the audience more immediately and convey their ideas with a greater subtlety, whereas the programme only offers a redundant Greek chorus. Don’t let it detract from this splendid performance.
