ED2011 3/5 Reviews ED2011 Theatre Reviews
Chamber Music (Delirium Theatre)
By Poppy Rowley | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
This one-act absurdist play presents the audience with eight historically notable women, held in an insane asylum. The script is clever and the characters enjoyable. However, there seems to be a lack of thought behind this production: although it’s set in an asylum, and thus the implication is that these aren’t of course the actual women, the power that each held in their time is lost in gabbling. The doctor, a sinister figure, appears careless and weak. Despite these criticisms, the company are promising, with some young talent emerging. The synchronised movements and simple costumes and props are clever but could have been used more; a little more work and justice to Arthur Kopit’s inspired 1962 play could be delivered.
