A Rotten Little Story (Bandwagon Theatre Company)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

A secret operation by the British government to sell the idyllic island of Diego Garcia, and as a result dump its long-residing inhabitants elsewhere, is the setting for this dreadful tale, which becomes all the more rotten when he realisation that it is based on true events of the 1960s dawns. The short play relies on minimal set and costume, which is effective in that it equalises the characters and creates a parity between the innocent indigenous people and power-hungry British and Americans. Although the actors alter their mannerisms impressively to embody different personae, the brief play lacks vivacity, and unfortunately you leave feeling slightly underwhelmed. An interesting piece in terms of its context, but falls short of spectacular as a whole.

Greenside, 5 – 13 Aug, 12.30pm (1.00pm), £4.00 – £5.00, fpp294.
