The Problem Of The Other (Symposium Productions)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Dramatic contemporary dance and powerful industrial music come together in this performance. A strong sexual energy torments the six female dancers, who move in tandem, and whose aim is to mimic the otherness of woman, as seen by the media, by men, and most prevalently, by other women. The piece starts off rather slow with the performers rarely moving, instead making noises not unlike the monkey soldiers from ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Ten minutes in, the dancing becomes focal, sexual and sorrowful, with the dancers’ faces often in anguish, covering their ears and doubling over in pain. It could have been more polished with the dancers’ abilities matched more equally; however, these limitations made the performance rawer and more emotional.
