This fabulous piece of theatre seamlessly weaves storytelling and music to create a humorous, engaging and refreshingly unpretentious interrogation of cultural identity. By posing the question of what might make him Indian, Hetain Patel explores how identity is created, whether by genes, language, rituals, or simply a sense of being connected to people in a significant way. Assisted by two excellent percussionist performers, Patel immerses us in the rhythmic vocabulary of Indian music, this element interspersed with heartfelt anecdotes and moments of simple visual beauty. The piece is exquisitely constructed, yet the colloquial delivery makes its complexity seem effortless, and means that its philosophy is never inaccessible.
