Gasping For Home (Lung Dreams)
By Thea Warren | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
This exuberant show races through a couple’s struggle to make a new life in America. Kendall Cooper shines as a personification of America, flashing a wholesome smile as she welcomes us in, yet gloriously wicked as she coaxes and manipulates the ill-fated lovers. Suffused with energy and satirical sparkle which sit awkwardly with a poignant ending, the show is diverse and ambitious. Multi-lingual dialogue and Isaura Flores’ beautiful, heartfelt singing effectively convey alienation, but whilst physical sequences require commendable energy, they sometimes seem a little out of control. Though the conclusion is somewhat confusing as upbeat music accompanies a sombre ending, the piece provides information in an accessible way and has a strong point to make about injustice and loss.
Greenside, 15 – 20 Aug, 8.05pm (8.50pm), £5.00, fpp171.
