Pippin (American High School Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Tuesday 16 August 2011

Despite their youth, the cast of ‘Pippin’ are staggeringly good. This revamped production of a theatre staple renews all the subversion and irony of the original, whilst still tipping its hat all the time to ‘Death of a Salesman’ and its theme of the futility of the American dream. However, at times the production does seem rushed – all dazzle and no development, and the harmonies are occasionally off, while ‘Leading Player’ Daniel Cho seemed to struggle to reach some of the high notes required. Nevertheless, the sheer enthusiasm of the cast, the great musical support, and amazing choreography pulls this show back. The positives definitely outweigh the negatives and this is well worth a ticket.

Church Hill Theatre, 8, 10 – 12 Aug, times vary, £5.00, fpp230.
