Hot Grog (Phillips Academy Theatre And Dance)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

A blockbuster’s attempt to replicate its initial success with a series of hackneyed sequels is often ill-fated – this is arguably true in the case of ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’. Well, this theatrical group may have just come up with the perfect antidote: Pirates And The Musical Theatre Venture – aka ‘Hot Grog’. This lively, swash-buckling, family-friendly take on the film boasts catchy tunes and comic dialogue. Although timing in line delivery is sometimes lacking, vocals are generally very strong, with the leading lady offering more to the part of pirate girl than a Keira Knightley pout. Direction is inventive and interesting, making excellent use of the space and creating more than you’d imagine possible out of step-ladders and sheets. Brilliance ahoy!
