Still Spinning (Mick Groves)
By Alison Treacy | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Time-travel has always been an aspiration of mine. Fascinated with the ways and worlds of the past, I was always eager to jump in a Delorean and head off to ‘simpler times’, about which I was nostalgic for no good reason. At ‘Still Spinning’, I finally got my chance. Mick Groves captivated an intimate audience with acoustic folk songs that jangled the nerves and prompted belly-laughs with their outrageous cheekiness. Unaccompanied ballads were sung in a rich, goosebump-inducing (if not always pitch-perfect) voice. Perfection, though, is not the mark of a true folk performer; rather, it is the audience-participation that counts, and this audience chimed in with each and every song. McFly? You know you want to.
