Africa Calling (Samba Sene and Diwan)
By Anna Hafsteinsson | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
I won’t beat around the bush. I’m no expert on world/fusion music. However, I went along to ‘Samba Sene and Diwan: Africa Calling’ hoping to learn a bit more and to enjoy a genre of music that I’m not very familiar with. This lively band, and their animated lead man Samba Sene, was brilliant. Samba Sene bounced around the stage with abounding energy and the band were evidently very competent musicians. Their concoction of different musical influences was infectious. West African tradition serves as the base, whilst calypso, soul, ska and rock are just some of those other influences thrown in for interest and diversity. The crowd was up dancing by the end of the show. Lots of fun.
Assembly George Square, dates vary, 2.30pm (3.30pm), £8.00 – £10.00, fpp218.
