PassionFlower (Becc Sanderson)
By Taylor Wallace | Published on Saturday 27 August 2011
“We’re here to soothe you”, says Becc Sanderson with “just a guitar, a voice, and a trombone”. Inspired by Billy Strayhorn’s song ‘Passion Flower’, every tune they play has some type of flower in the title and most are about love. These three instruments create a surprising blend of sounds, and it was the perfect show to wind me down after a hectic week. Covering a range of musical genres, including Elvis Costello, The White Stripes, and Radiohead the trio is surprisingly diverse. In my opinion, there are two ways to cover a song – to try and imitate it or create something new from the original. PassionFlower may have started with imitation but it truly is a unique piece of work.
New Town Theatre, 4 – 28 Aug (not 16), 10.00pm (11.00pm), £5.00 – £12.00, fpp215.
