Cathedral Celebrity Organ Recitals (St Mary’s Cathedral)
By Lauren Kelly | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
The highly-varied programme of this stellar concert comprises classics by Jehan Alain, Louis Marchand, J. S. Bach, and Franz Liszt, as well as Judith Bingham’s new piece ‘The Everlasting Crown’. The classic pieces will be well-known to organ aficionados, and their conscientious ordering offers food for thought – the juxtaposition in mood and style between one piece and the next draws out their emotional intensity and shows the versatility of the organ as an instrument. Bingham’s sensational piece, which explores the concept of monarchy, features memorable rhythms and violent chords which will make you jump, and as for Stephen Farr, his talent is simply astronomical. It is difficult to imagine a better introduction to the wonders of organ music than this performance.
