Burns2Brel 2! (Scottish Singer Wendy Carle Taylor With Fraser Fifield And Friends)
By Felicity Martin | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
This one-off Fringe performance and inauguration of Bruntsfield Evangelical Church as a Fringe venue saw Wendy Carle Taylor interpreting traditional Scottish, Irish and French songs inspired by poets such as Robert Burns and Jacques Brel. Ranging from an anti-slavery song to an allegory for Nazi Germany, Wendy’s choices were not only melodically stunning but meaningful, too. An incredibly warm, smiling personality who encouraged the audience to join in, she also has a voice which is utterly spectacular. Accompaniment came in the form of a five-piece backing band who played spine-tingling flute and saxophone solos. The performance was concluded in true Scottish style with a demonstration from bagpipe player Fraser Fifield and a moving rendition of Auld Lang Syne.
Bruntsfield Evangelical Church, 19 Aug, 8.00pm (9.00pm), £9.00 – £11.00, fpp197.
