Absolutely Free Live Music (Whistlebinkies & Royal Mile Tavern)
By Julian Benson | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
There is little that stood out about the music on display at Whistlebinkies; it pleased the crowds well enough, but it got little more than head bobbing from the audience. The night was loud and rhythmic, and ticked the boxes of live music, but it lacked the presence to draw in the audience. Instead of dancing with the crowd or paying them any attention, the singer just stood there, shuffling with his eyes closed during the instrumental sections. The whole band looked dead behind the eyes, and fitted the stereotypes too perfectly – zombie bassist, sleeping drummer, self-interested singer. It won’t have you dancing but it’s fine background music.
Whistlebinkies, 1 Aug – 4 Sep, times vary, free, fpp192.
