A Romantic Journey (Lesley Bruce, Elizabeth Woollven, Geoffrey Madell, Helen Maddox)

A delightful programme of Mozart and Schumann arranged for soprano, mezzo and baritone, ‘A Romantic Journey’ is a soothing experience. The simplicity of three voices accompanied by only a piano is refreshing, and the setting of St Andrew’s and St George’s West Church is ideal for such a recital of chamber music. Though not particularly ambitious, original or modern, the arrangement is nonetheless lovely and an enjoyable performance. I especially liked the grand finale when the eleven strong ladies’ choir took to the stage in a swelling of voices, filling the church hall and really making the most of the building’s acoustic potential. A peaceful and civilised refuge from the panic of the Festival and Edinburgh’s weather.

St Andrew’s and St George’s West, 12.30pm (1.30pm), £7.00 – £9.00, fpp218.
