It Takes Four To Tango With Panto (Edinburgh People’s Theatre Theatre)
By Rohanne Udall | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Oh it’s simply lovely! Even though the name scared me at first, this show was a great surprise. Newington’s amateur theatre must be saved, and the chairman has a cunning plan: sex – think ‘The Vicar of Dibley’. The jokes are often crude and the finale is slapstick farce, but it’s all achieved with joyful vibrancy and charm. The characters are a little annoying – Joyce’s simpering becomes as grating as Margaret’s squawk – but it doesn’t matter as they are played with such delightful comic effect. The whole thing is primed for laughs and the audience lap it up. My only other problem would be the unfortunately slow changeovers, in which the audience immediately descend into chatter. Even so, it’s hearty, warming entertainment.
St Peter’s, 24 – 27 Aug, times vary, £8.00 – £10.00, fpp272.
