Hidden Gardens Of The Royal Mile (Greenyonder Tours)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Jean, our tour guide, greeted me warmly outside our meeting point on the Royal Mile. A group of around thirty green-space lovers followed Jean up and down a variety of closes to view a few of the public gardens of the Old Town. A potted history accompanies each pocket of green, with the tale of the elusive ‘Mushroom Trust’ being one of the most interesting – a wealthy family, wishing not to be named, demolished and renovated the once-notorious slum of Dunbar Close in the 70s, into a lush, scented square filled with topiary trees, lavender and sweet peas. As Granny’s favourite, the sight of sweet peas touched my heart. An informative, enjoyable tour, but perhaps a tad expensive.

Outside John Knox House, 5 – 29 Aug (not 6, 13, 20, 27), times vary, £8.00, fpp184.
