Yianni: Things That Make You Go ‘Oooooh!’ – Free (Yianni / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Lynsey Martenstyn | Published on Tuesday 16 August 2011
Free things make me dubious. Dubious of the product’s quality, honesty and integrity. Thankfully at the Fringe things are different. The branding of “free”, particularly in comedy, could be the next big thing – and Yianni also is close to becoming this. He begins by distinguishing between different types of ‘ohh’: from the uninterested “uh” to an extremely interested “ooooh!”, then rather than being reliant on gags, Yianni delves into philosophy, mathematical equations and the effects of LSD, with a focus on the interesting and humorous. He has an enthusiastic stage presence and a good amount of original material – the occasional memory hiccup and odd borrowed joke don’t undermine the overall product, which is ultimately delivered well.
