Who Are The Jocks? (Scott Capurro)
By Harriet Dodd | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
“What’s the point of coming to a comedy show if you’re going to be offended?” asks Scott Capurro. He begins his show with offensive material, creating a character whose own bleak history might explain his prejudice of others. Capurro’s premise is presumably to examine the psychology of hatred; however, it ultimately feels like an elaborate framing to justify cheap laughs. And although it is clear that the voice of ignorance is spoken through an well-meaning man, his irony doesn’t succeed, and it is the cheap laughs that shine the strongest, and the ugliest. Capurro should stick to what he does best – bouncing off the crowd and creating character impersonations are far more his forte than racist harangues.
