Tony Law – Go Mr Tony Go! (Tony Law)
By Celia Dugua | Published on Tuesday 16 August 2011
With material covering topics ranging from porn-star names to takeaway coffee-lids, when Tony Law hits home, he really holds the audience captivated. Unfortunately, the pace suffers from several slow sketches, particularly the one about the phonology of Gok Wan. But paradoxically, without these more pedestrian sketches, Tony couldn’t have shone so brightly as in his ‘commentary/analysis’ sections, in which he shares his thoughts about why certain jokes don’t work and how he treats comedy in general. In fact, he enjoys opening the show so much that he does it thrice. As he speaks about how truth is at the heart of comedy, he is at his best in material closest to his “dangerous” self, making for an honest and interesting show.
The Stand Comedy Club, 7 – 28 Aug, 12.00pm (1.00pm), £7.00 – £8.00, fpp161.
