Neil Dougan – Rough Rared (Neil Dougan)

By | Published on Tuesday 30 August 2011

A conventionally charming comedian, an hour spent in Neil Dougan’s company is enjoyable. He begins with jokes about his childhood before moving into the well-tilled ground of how the world has changed since he was at school. It’s all well-delivered by a strong stage persona, but I found it was when he went off-script, dealing with hecklers, that he was at his most entertaining; instead of putting them down, Dougan drew their heckle into his material, and with it the heckler. This created a friendlier, more intimate atmosphere. If he were to develop in that direction, Dougan would stand a little higher in the crowd. As it is, he is fairly similar to many other middling acts at this year’s Festival.
