Michael Workman – Humans Are Beautiful (Gilded Balloon / Token Events)
By Eleanor Pender | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
This show is not all about humans. In fact, it is more of an out-of-body experience. A self-confessed goth, Michael Workman takes the audience on a journey of animal appreciation and human critique. From the start, he announced his act was not one of typical laugh-out-loud one-liners. Following an existential journey, different features of the war-ridden landscape created by the dog-loving Australian led to anecdotes and contemplative thoughts about people, art and perspectives on life. I got the impression he’d been let down by people just that once too often. More theatrical than comic, this was a novel interpretation of human capability, though I wasn’t entirely convinced Workman believed in the title of his show.
Gilded Balloon Teviot, 3 – 28 Aug (not 15), 10.45pm, £9.00 – £10.00, fpp118.
