Michael J Dolan – Dress To Depress (Lee Martin for Gag Reflex Management)
By Katie Cunningham | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
A pessimistic comedy show about being a pessimistic comedy show, as Michael Dolan says, there isn’t any particular theme here other than his self-awareness that he’s getting older, that he hates his friends, and that he and his girlfriend have nothing in common. As expected, it gets funnier as he gets morbid. While it is very well delivered, with brilliant observations about the miserable end of the Fringe thrown in, some of the material was typical of this type of unhappy self-aware comedy. While this doesn’t make it bad, it can be disheartening when you’re able to guess the punch lines in a show. And although they’re still funny, it’s the new bits that make the show really, really good.
Laughing Horse at The White Horse, 4 – 28 Aug (not 15), 6.10pm (7.10pm), free, fpp118.
