London Is Funny Presents… (Tom Webb / PBH’s Free Fringe / LondonIsFunny.com)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Reviewing this free comedy show is an exercise in futility because, aside from ebullient host Tom Webb, the line-up changes daily. The three performers on this occasion were: Luke Benson, a likeable Geordie with a score of quotable one-liners and a memorable sketch listing unsuitable racehorse names; Richard Sandling’s fictional character Spak Whitman, an urban poet whose gritty political invective was hard-hitting but not terribly amusing; and the foppish and loquacious Tom Allen. Allen’s twenty-minute routine was elegant and refined, although I felt slightly disappointed when he regurgitated large swathes of material from previous years. I would definitely recommend seeing ‘London Is Funny’ before the end of the Festival – who knows what future stars it might uncover?
