Leila’s Ladies (Leila Borris / PBH’s Free Fringe)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Leila transforms herself into a varied cast of ladies, including a bike obsessed performance poet, a chav rapper, a sexy European, and an autograph hunter. With elaborate and well thought out costumes, each character is entertaining, though there are definite overlaps in the characterisation, with an emphasis on sex and general oddities. All-in-all, however, Leila engages the audience and encourages our gentle heckling. A guest appearance from stand-up James Burwood generates a nice change of atmosphere, but the show would benefit greatly from picking the pace up a little. Costume changes are filled with pre-recorded sketches, but I would have preferred more theatrical transitions; instead of presenting herself, then pausing, then presenting each subsequent character, there could have been more fluidity.
