Jack Mink: Making Light (Jack Mink)
By Jennifer Ajderian | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Crucifixion, torture, and Tom Cruise are subjects which should be treated carefully by comedians and, as I learnt at ‘Making Light’, perhaps not at all by bad comedians who mime. This string of loosely connected hypothetical musings was perhaps a half-hearted attempt at black comedy, but stopped just short of being funny. Jack Mink’s catchphrase of “Gotta laugh!” was hardly convincing, and neither was the combination of clown smile and jazz hands that punctuated every tragic turn. The few chuckles that did come followed early bouts of surrealism and bad puns, neither of which managed to loosen us up enough for watching Mink being nailed to a cross. Awkward enough to make you want to crawl into a box and throw away the key.
