Big Dave’s Gay-B-C Of Life – Free (Dave Wickenden / Laughing Horse Free Festival)
By Katie Allen | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Disarmingly self-deprecating and wearing the glitziest silver shoes you’ve ever seen, you really want to give Wickenden a hug and, in my case, lots of stars. What held me back was the do-it-yourself ‘press-play’ approach to his set, which resulted in some technical hitches, was distracting, and looked unprofessional. And while Wickenden’s flirty banter with the audience was genuinely entertaining, the songs themselves were a bit of a let-down, as an actual piano only featured in a couple; the rest were sung to pre-recorded music. For fans of 4 Poofs And A Piano it’s probably worth going anyway, and Wickenden is a very funny man, but overall I was left a little disappointed.
Laughing Horse at The Beehive Inn, 4 – 28 Aug (not 16, 21), 1.15pm (2.15pm), free, fpp48.
