Waiting For Bono (Miss Hypnotique and John Callaghan / Laughing Horse Free Festival)
By Harriet Dodd | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
The premise of this show, as described by the performers, is ‘killing time’, and boy, does ‘Waiting For Bono’ feel like it. As we await the arrival of “Mr Bone-o off the U2”, we are kept busy by the ‘stadium rock meets electronic’ show tunes delivered by a pair reminiscent of Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee. Some bizarre props are raided from a fancy-dress box, and the show lumbers on with the help of talking puppets and an upended doll’s body attached to a hat. I suppose we are meant to be laughing at them, but even the slapstick moments fail to raise a smile. There is then a shaving-cream pie gag. Enough said.
Laughing Horse at The Phoenix, 20 – 28 Aug, 6.50pm (7.40pm), free, fpp16.
