ED2011 Book Reviews
Namings And Hauntings (Louise Welsh)
By Camille Burns | Published on Tuesday 30 August 2011
‘The Girl on the Stairs’ is Louise Welsh’s new book and is loosely based on Henry James’ chilling novella ‘The Turn of the Screw.’ Welsh tentatively announced that the short novel would appear next year and, when she had sufficiently reminded the audience of its work-in-progress status, she began to read from it. The audience were introduced to the pregnant Jane arriving in Berlin to live with her partner Petra but the passage verged a little on the mundane. It gave, however, good insight into Welsh’s writing process. When asked about her daily writing routine, Welsh said she works the same hours as bankers (without bonuses), but never writes in cafés as her eavesdropping habit proves very distracting.
Peppers Theatre, Aug 25, 6.45pm (7.45pm), £8.00 – £10.00, bfpp44.
