Debate – The End Of Books?
By Camille Burns | Published on Friday 26 August 2011
Are we witnessing the end of the book? This, the motion put forward by the Guardian, was resolutely defeated. Though both sides of the topical argument were thoughtfully and fairly considered, a speaker tied to the Amazon Kindle, or with some aspect of the digitisation of books, would have made a valuable addition to the panel. The debate was eventually opened to the floor, but at this point the debate failed, as none of the panelists, or other audience members, seemed willing to engage with the points made. The result was skewed, inevitably, due to the vested interests of the writers, publishers and avid readers present and, in the end, it is unlikely that anyone left having changed their opinions.
