A love-letter to the Breakfast Club, where meaning is lost behind the too-dark hues of rose-tinted glasses. The forgotten sixth member (a British exchange student) awaits the others; a situation that is initially played for laughs. The script is packed full of references to John Hughes’ movie, without saying anything about it, or grappling with any of its more recent controversies. Then, in the final ten minutes it transforms into an engagingly delivered monologue, a howl of pop-culture adoration, name-checking dozens of shows, movies and games from the last few decades… but again I wonder: to what end? Essentially this show seems to exist just to point at things the writer likes, that we like too, and that’s not enough.
