Beautiful moments of physicality can’t quite transform this interesting conceptual art-piece into effective theatre. A heartfelt contextualisation from the performer, after the lights came up, explained that what we had just watched was his poetic, artistic response to researching the experience of water dwellers from Hong Kong’s outlying islands, whose way of life was lost decades ago. Unfortunately, this was not at all clear from the show itself, the first third of which was wholly incomprehensible; the actor murmured his lines softly, drowned out entirely by the loud tonal soundscape blaring from speakers. I enjoyed several physical theatre sequences, which were almost balletic in nature, but overall its incoherence washed all meaning away.
