Dearly Departed (Savannah Arts Academy)
By Charlotte Ryan | Published on Thursday 23 August 2012
In this black comedy about the lead-up to a funeral in the American Deep South, Savannah Arts Academy show off their not inconsiderable talents, as they skilfully deal with an alternately dark and farcical series of events. However, the plot is perhaps overly sentimental and the actors’ masks sometimes slip to reveal the nervous teens beneath. The inclusion of a choir was also slightly puzzling as the singing never quite hit the mark nor created the desired effect. Overall, though, this was an enjoyable and funny piece which did something a little bit different and played to the strengths of a younger troupe well.
