Circus The Show (Showmen Productions)

After some clown crowd work as the lengthy queue snakes in, we are welcomed by the Ring Master, who castigates the clown before welcoming us, old-school showman style, promising a bounty of performative delights. The promise is largely delivered through three impressive performers, each doing two turns. These include hula-hoop, magic and illusion, juggling, and aerial gymnastics, before the clown gets to perform his fine finale. While he plays the role well, for me there is a little too much Ring Master in the mix, too often leading to a slight drop in the pace and momentum. However, for a pleasing and impressive showcase of this kind of entertainment for small people, Circus. Is. The. Show.

Assembly George Square, until 25 Aug.
