COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
Chatterbox (Lubna Kerr)
Regrettably more topical than it should be, Lubna Kerr’s semi-autobiographical solo drama takes us back to her 1970s schooldays in (racist, obs) Glasgow. Picked on for her skin colour, and also her stammer, Lubna voices characters from her difficult past: a tapestry which gives room for a useful and important injection of nuance. Well-paced, with a nicely judged mix of laughs and emotional hits. There is an arc of overcoming all of this to succeed in adult life, but some hurts endure. Sidebar – while this isn’t a children’s show, I took the trusty young co-reviewer along, and I’d say Chatterbox is a really good way to open or develop conversations that need to be had, apparently with increasing urgency.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 25 Aug.
