We all have views on slavery: but what do we know of those who were slaves? This powerful show offers a lyrical, simply-spoken and yet devastating elucidation. Henry ‘Box’ Brown’s now dimly remembered story of escape from slavery to become what we might now call a circuit celebrity (and magician) frames this show. Mostly, though, it’s about his life as a slave before that audacious escape: the consequences, sometimes mundane but often deeply disturbing, of his and his loved ones’ lack of freedom. Particularly notable is the sharp condemnation of the complicity (beyond mere permissive hypocrisy) of religious leaders. With compelling song, rap and empathy between the performers – and some neat magic illuminating the narrative – this is fine innovative theatre.
