Beyond The Cap And Gown (Trading Masks Theatre Company)

Five friends, on their graduation night, faced with the uncertainty of what may be coming next – the themes this piece explores are universal. It’s a roller-coaster of living up to expectations, defying the stereotypes society has placed upon you, and battling with the future, all whilst managing the difficult relationships of your early twenties. The script, however, fails to convey these in a nuanced or natural manner. The actors are clearly feeling, but the dialogue does not allow any of the characters room for growth, leaving their journeys feeling forced and their relationships inauthentic. Like so many plays that just miss the mark, the concept definitely has potential, but the writing did not allow the actors to fulfil it.
