Beyond Krapp (Peter McCormick And Barton Road Production)

This show is beyond good. Cormac is dead, and has huge plans for his funeral, but his mum has different ideas. Plus, he has the issue of also being haunted by his ex to deal with. A truly divisive show that’s aimed clearly at those that love dark humour and a depressing tale, although it does also have a killer, mismatched soundtrack. Peter McCormick impressively pulls off playing a difficult person with such varied characteristics, and is the highlight of the show. His acting shines, but his writing talents are also very much on display, and this performance showcases someone with great potential. I struggled to get fully invested in the story, perhaps because of the slow paced nature of the play, but it is nonetheless a tremendous piece that will make you question your own life.

Pleasance Courtyard, until 26 Aug.
