COVERING THE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL SINCE 1996
BATSU! (Underbelly / BATSU! Moon)
Ninjas pouring out sake, comedians DJing with mousetraps and a giant chicken – yes, this is ‘BATSU!’. The show, which started in the United States, is based on the Japanese batsu game, and sees a group of comedians competing to win different challenges and hoping to not receive punishment if they lose. It’s a fascinating combination of Japanese and American culture, leading to some bizarre situations, like the drinking of soy sauce from a man’s belly button as pop music blares. Unfortunately, the majority of the two-hour show is not the comedy, or even the punishments, but introductions to the world of BATSU! and its rituals. The energy from all involved, however, is infectious, making for a fun evening – though there might be a bit less comedy than expected.
Underbelly Cowgate, until 24 Aug.
